Catechist certification for Catholic religious education

Participants who successfully complete the sequence of six required courses, along with seminars in spirituality, qualify for a Standard Catechist Certificate. This certificate is jointly endorsed by Adult Catholic Education of the Treasure Valley, the Diocese of Boise and Gonzaga University. The courses and training are most often scheduled to allow completion of all six courses during a two-year period, but they may be completed at any pace.
To earn your catechist certificate

    1.  You must complete the following courses:
         Basic Catholic Beliefs
         Introduction to Scripture
         Introduction to Church History
         Introduction to Sacraments
         Introduction to Theology
         Catechetical Methods -one of three offerings:
            for teaching children in parish schools of religion
            for teaching in Catholic schools, or
            for catechesis with adult leraners

    2.   And you must attend the following seminars:
          Spirituality of the Catechist I
          Spirituality of the Catechist II

Continuing Education Credit:
Additionally, those who hold a teaching certificate for the State of Idaho may apply these catechetical courses for continuing education credit (CEU) from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington. For an additional fee of $40.00 (payable to Gonzaga University), eligible students who attend all class sessions, participate in class discussions and complete a written assignment can qualify for such credit.

Note: This credit is valid for teacher re-certification only and may NOT be applied toward a degree program.
Participants who are not seeking a CEU are not required to complete the written assignments but are strongly encouraged to do so.
